Case Study: Civil Rights and the Deliberate Pace of Change

This case study examines factors presented by Thomas Birkland in the course text, that influenced the development of civil rights policy from the post-Civil War era to today. These include economics, the balance of power, judicial decisions, rising tensions in the country, and most recently, the influence of public opinion in the era of rapid information dissemination via the Internet. In each instance, the desire for justice, equity and fairness were the driving forces requiring responsiveness from public officials to advance and codify civil rights for Black Americans. 

 

Ethical Analysis Using the IRAC Method: Executive Order Ending Radical and Wasteful DEI Programs

This case study employs the IRAC method to examine the ethical dilemma faced by non-profit organizations across the United States as a result of the President’s Executive Order demanding that all diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives cease immediately. Ethical theories in public administration provide the framework for the implications and potential actions in response to the directive.

This narrated PowerPoint presentation is a profile of Columbus, Ohio. Ethnically diverse and economically segregated, in 2016 Columbus was awarded a $40 million dollar Challenge Grant to adopt an aggressive schedule of implementing new technologies, establishing itself as a Smart City. Among the Smart Columbus initiatives were driverless public transportation to underserved neighborhoods and a mobile app to remove barriers to accessing human service programs.
